Irina Bokova, the current Director General of UNESCO

On 22 September 2009, Bokova was elected Director-General of UNESCO, defeating the Egyptian Farouk Hosni Bokova is the first woman and the first person from Eastern Europe to hold this position of the United Nations. Succeeds Japanese Koichiro Matsuura.
