Mosteiro da Batalha

The history of the Portuguese presence in the restricted list of the UNESCO world heritage site began in December 1983, in Florence, Italy, when the committee gave the titles to the Historic Centre of Angra do Heroismo in the Azores, the Monastery of Batalha, the Monastery of Jeronimos and Tower of Belém in Lisbon, and the Convent of Christ in Tomar.

Three years later, in 1986, UNESCO awarded the title to the Historic Centre of Évora, which is, according to the criteria of the organization, a "witness to a considerable exchange of influences during a given period or a particular cultural area ', and as Angra do Heroismo, a "prime example of a type of building or architectural or technological ensemble or landscape, illustrating one or more significant periods in the history of humanity."
